Project Description

In collaboration with Greenchain Consulting, Urban Food Strategies, and the Sustainability Solutions Group, we conducted a detailed economic analysis of the local food processing industry in the Cowichan Valley Regional District on Vancouver Island.  We also looked at best practices for expanding local food processing in other jurisdictions.  This information was then used to develop strategies to expand food processing in the valley.  This project was conducted partly as an economic development initiative but also as a climate adaptation strategy.   Climate change will likely result in increased storms that could cut off food supplies during storm events.  It may also make certain land areas unsuitable for food production due to excessive flooding or droughts.
