Project Description

Assessed the economic and waste reduction benefits of establishing staffed and/or unstaffed reusable materials collection points at transfer stations and disposal facilities in Metro Vancouver. In line with the 3Rs hierarchy, in which reuse is a higher order level of reduction than recycling, the study asked the question: “If we accept materials for recycling at all transfer and disposal facilities, why don’t we offer the opportunity to drop off higher value reusable items.” The study demonstrated that, with staffed reuse collection vehicles stationed outside the tipping zones, it would be possible to divert many tonnes of waste and to generate over $10 million in new annual revenues for reuse organizations.
